8 dead in twin road mishaps

 Shillong/Jowai: Eight persons died while 19 others were seriously injured in two separate road mishaps in the State on Sunday.

In the first accident, six persons died and fourteen others were seriously injured when a bus on its way to Nongstoin from Shillong skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Mawmaram in West Khasi Hills district on Sunday morning.

The deceased included the driver and five passengers. Four bodies have been shifted Shillong Civil Hospital while two bodies were shifted to Mairang CHC for post-mortem.

The injured were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital while two seriously injured persons were shifted to Woodland Hospital, Shillong.

Around 50 passengers were onboard the bus when it left Shillong for Nongstoin.

In the other mishap, two persons including a woman were killed and five others, all of the same family, were grievously injured in a road mishap in Jaintia Hills district on Sunday.

The incident occured when a Maruti Alto (ML05 G-0919), occupied by seven persons including three minors, was hit by a bulldozer (JCB) coming from the opposite side on National Highway 44 at Kong-ong.

The Maruti Alto was proceeding from Rymbai to Shillong.

The driver, Lison Rymbai (38) died on the spot while his elder sister, Pyndap Rymbai (43) succumbed to her injuries at KJP Assembly Hospital, Jowai.

Five persons including three minors — Yunify Rymbai (10), Indica Rymbai (7) and Loridia Rymbai (7) — along with Pyrta Rymbai and one Rama, who works with the family, were critically injured and were immediately shifted to Jowai Civil Hospital by two ambulances. (Contd on P-10)
