Blockade on national highways
Imphal: An economic blockade to demand full revenue district status for Sardar Hills began last midnight on the two national highways here. The blockade, which was called by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) would continue till August seven and can go on further if the demands were not met. All the trucks carrying goods were stopped and were not allowed to pass through. Passenger vehicles were, however, allowed to move freely. The state government had earlier contemplated to declare Sadar hills and Jiribam as revenue districts. Another movement for district status is also going on at Ukhrul district. The state has nine districts, four in the valley areas and five in the hill areas. The Sadar Hills is dominated by Kuki and is within Senapati district. Jiribam is in the Manipur Assam border areas and is under Imphal East district. People of the area complain that they have to come all the way to the capital for all works. Meanwhile, to stop occurrence of violence the Additional District Magistrate of Kangpokpi has imposed restrictions in Sadar Hills area under CrPC 144. (UNI)
ILS at Mizoram airport
Aizawl: Instrument Landing System (ILS), which would enable planes land safely during low visibility conditions, would start functioning from tomorrow at Lengpui near here, the lone airport in Mizoram. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has approved the use of ILS at Lengpui airport, Lalhming Liana, the only Rajya Sabha MP from the state and member of the consultative committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation, said on Monday. Commissioning of the ILS was delayed following a damage of its equipment after a Cessna Caravan aircraft belonging to the North East Shuttle Service, overshooted from the runway, crashed and landed at Lengpui on May 4.
