NONGSTOIN: The Nongstoin town Committee, which was authorised to run the Nongstoin Town Super Market, has not been able manage it properly.

Constructed in 2002, the market was funded by Urban Affairs Department, government of Meghalaya.

Sadly for the past nine years the complex has been utilized only for parking of vehicles. Of the total 34 rooms only few have been rented out. There is no power as the MeECL has disconnected the electricity connection.

Locals feel that such a huge complex in the heart of Nongstoin town could have earned a huge amount of revenue had it been maintained properly. “It could have been given to any private company or individual to run business,” they said.

R Lyngdoh, Secretary, Nongstoin Town Committee, said only a few businessmen have taken some rooms and the revenue earned from them was not enough to pay the electricity bill and hence the MeECL disconnected the electricity connection.

The Secretary said the committee will not allow the vehicle owners to use the place to park their vehicles in due course of time.
