‘Sonia’s surgery successful’
NEW DELHI: Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi was recovering in intensive care after undergoing “successful” surgery in the United States, a party spokesman said on Friday.”The surgery is over,” Congress Party spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi said, adding that the “surgeon had indicated that the operation was successful.”Sonia Gandhi, 64, was recovering in an intensive care unit.”As this is a personal matter that pertains to her health and medical treatment, her family requests that her privacy be respected,” Dwivedi said.Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra are with her.Sonia will be away for 2-3 weeks, and the responsibility of overseeing the affairs of the Congress party in her absence has been assigned to a four-member group that includes Rahul Gandhi. The move is being read in political circles as formal recognition of the growing stature of the Amethi MP who has so far consciously kept a low profile.(Agencies)
Two infiltration bids foiled
SRINAGAR: The Army foiled two infiltration bids by heavily-armed militants on Friday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.The attempts by militants to sneak into the Kashmir Valley from across the border were plugged by troops stationed in Bangus valley and Keran sector, he said.The spokesman said the troops challenged the infiltrating militants who opened fire and returned in the face of retaliation.There was no immediate report of any casualty in the exchange of fire between the two sides, he said, adding that a massive search operation was undertaken to ensure that the militants would not be able to infiltrate into the Valley.This is the eighth infiltration bid foiled by troops in Kupwara district over the past 10 days.Four Army personnel including a Junior Commissioned Officer and five militants were killed in the gun battles following the infiltration bids.(PTI)
Cop kills colleague, self
NEW DELHI: A young CISF constable allegedly shot dead a fellow lady constable posted along with him at the Yamuna Bank Metro Station in east Delhi before killing himself on Friday morning.The incident took place at around 7am, a senior police official said.M Pillai, who was in his early twenties, allegedly pumped six bullets into the woman Constable N V S Teja, also of the same age, before shooting himself, the official said.Pillai, who belonged to Kerala, and Teja, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh, were recruited in the force in 2009. Teja was leaving for home after her night shift while Pillai had just joined duty when he opened fire at her.Teja died on the spot while Pillai was rushed to nearby Walia Nursing Home in Laxmi Nagar where he was declared brought dead.Police is investigating the reason behind the incident. “It appears that they were in a relationship and there was some personal dispute. We are investigating the matter,” the official said.(PTI)
