JOWAI: Police have arrested 19-year-old class VIII student of a Khliehriat-based school for raping and then assaulting a fourteen-year-old class IX student of the same school within the school premises on Friday.

The incident happened just after school hours at around 3:30 pm when the victim, on her way home from school, met the accused Kmen Swer who forcibly dragged her to an isolated place behind the church located within the school premises and raped her.

“After committing the heinous crime, he badly assaulted the girl but fled away when he saw the victim’s elder sister arriving on the spot,” the girl’s uncle Govind Nongtdu said.

The sister found the victim lying unconscious behind the church and immediately rushed her to Khliehriat CHC and later lodged an assault complaint with Khliehriat Police as she was unaware that her sister had been raped, Nongtdu informed.

Surprisingly, the doctor at Khliehriat CHC who examined the girl, could not establish the rape.

“The victim whose mouth, head and other parts of the body were swollen was then shifted to Nazareth Hospital in Shillong where the doctors confirmed the rape,” one of the victim’s relative said.

On learning of the rape, the victim’s family immediately shifted her to Ganesh Das Hospital where the rape was again confirmed. The victim who had regained consciousness by that time narrated the incident to her parents.

Following the disclosure, a fresh complaint was lodged on Sunday with Khliehriat Police who immediately arrested Kmen Swer and booked him under section 132/8, (11) 325, 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
