AGP MLA offers to quit
From Our Correspondent
Guwahati: A senior legislator of Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Padma Hazarika has written letter to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi offering to quit his position of MLA from Sootea constituency in Sonitpur district in protest against the biased attitude of the ruling Congress government in selecting constituencies for development of roads by the state Public Works department under Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan.
In a letter written to the chief minister the opposition MLA protested the government’s decision to select all the 78 assembly constituencies represented by ruling Congress legislators while picking total 81 LACs that will be provided with Rs 50 lakh each for construction of roads.
In the letter to the CM, Hazarika asked, “As the chief minister, are you not responsible for development of assembly constituencies represented by opposition legislators? If you make public announcement that you are not going to take up development works in constituencies represented by opposition parties, I promise to quit the position of legislator of Sootea constituency in the greater interest of development of the people.”
The AGP legislator alleges that the Congress government is not following any particular norms in selecting the total 81 constituencies for development of roads under the SC Sub-Plan in order to include all the 78 constituencies represented by the Congress irrespective of the percentage of SC population in those constituencies.
He pointed out that in his home district of Sonitpur, the government has selected all the six Congress-represented constituencies leaving out the rest two constituencies represented by opposition political parties including Sootea.
