Lightning strike kills two women

Rangiya (Assam): Two women working in a paddy field died on Saturday after they were struck by lightning in Assam’s Kamrup (rural) district. Official sources said the two women, Khabi Boro and Basanti Boro, were working a paddy field at Bamunigaon near Boko when they were hit by lightning. The duo died on the spot. (PTI)

ECI asks Nagaland to revise voters’ list

Kohima: The Election Commission of India directed Nagaland to take up special summary revision of electoral rolls with reference to January 1, 2012 as the qualifying date. Official sources said here on Sunday as per the programme, draft publication of rolls would be on October 1, 2011 while period for filling of claims and objections would be carried out from October 1 to November 1, 2011. Reading of relevant section of photo electoral rolls in Gram Sabha or Local Bodies and verification of names would be held on October 8 and 11, 2011. Special Campaign dates with booth level agents of political parties for receiving claims and objections would be held on October 9, 16 and 23, 2011 while disposal of claims and objections would be on December 1, 2011. Updating the database, merging of photographs, updating the control tables and preparation and printing of supplementary list would be from December 1 to December 31, 2011. The final publication of electoral rolls would be made on January 5, 2012, sources said. (UNI)

ICAR hails natl award recepient

Kohima: The Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Research Complex based at Jharnapani in Dimapur, has felicitated Alemla Therie, recipient of Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puruskar. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Director, ICAR Complex, Dr Bidyut C Deka appreciated Alemla for bringing laurel to Nagaland and Northeast in general. Dr P G Chengappa, ex-Vice-Chancellor, UAS, Bangalore and Chairman, QRT Review team congratulated Alemla for her achievement and requested the farmers of the state to follow her footprints to earn their livelihood in a more dignified way. Alemla received the Jagjivan Ram Abhinav Kisan Puruskar, 2010 from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 16 last at a function organized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to celebrate its 83rd Foundation Day at NASC Complex, New Delhi. N’land to stress on backwardness

Kohima: Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary Transport and Mechanical Dako Phom has said backwardness cannot be removed by others but own intensive effort will remove the tag of ‘backward’ from society. He was addressing the 8th Fresher’s Social of Chang College Students’ Union Kohima (CCSUK) under the theme ‘Striving towards change’ held here on Saturday. Impressed with the CCKSU’s Motto ‘Toil and Shine’, he said shining is the product of hard work. ”We are under the tag of backwardness, let us remove it by striving so that the tag will be cut off from the society,” Phom said and urged the students to bring change in the society. (UNI)
