Paralysed man survives being barbecued

London: A paralysed man in Britain had a close shave with death as his mobility scooter went up in flames just a moment after his carer pulled him aside.

Terrified Aiden Cassidy, 77, who is paralysed down the left side, described how he was moments away from being ‘barbecued’ on the machine, Daily Mail reported.

As Cassidy made his way to a car-boot sale, his carer Anita Coombs was coming the other way. She spotted some little blue flame under his seat.

She quickly parked up and rushed to Cassidy’s aid, pulling him away from the scooter and saving his life, as second later it went up in flames.

Cassidy, of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, said: “Anita saved my life. I could have been barbecued if it wasn’t for her. I couldn’t get away from the scooter because I had a stroke last year.

“The flames were coming over the back where the batteries were … nearly touching my feet.

“One of the batteries exploded and the next thing I knew it went up. Anita was coming to see me anyway and had to help me down off it else I would have gone up with it,” he said. (IANS)

World’s first beer that can be drunk in space created

Melbourne: An Australian brewing company has created the world’s first beer that could be drunk in space.

Microbrewer 4 Pines Brewing Company developed the beer in conjunction with Queensland University of Technology’s zero gravity drop tower.

Space engineer and co-creator of the beer Jason Held said QUT’s drop tower, the only one in the southern hemisphere, had played a key role in getting the recipe and fizz right.

“We tested three recipes and were able to observe them side by side,” the Herald Sun quoted Dr Held as saying.

“We could see how each behaved and used some of that data to select the right one,” he added. (ANI)

Child plunges to death

London: A toddler from Britain died after she fell from her parents’ 13th-floor luxury apartment in Singapore, a media report said here.

The body of the three-year-old girl landed next to the apartment block’s busy swimming pool in broad daylight, Daily Mail reported Saturday.

“It was horrific. There were people by the pool and the girl fell in front of us,” said a woman, who witnessed the fall.

The unnamed baby is reported to be the daughter of a professional couple from Britian who are working in Singapore. It is thought she was being looked after by a maid when she fell.

None of the parents were at home when the tragic incident took place. They have since moved out of the flat and are being helped by British embassy staff. The death is being probed by police but foul play has not been suggested, the Mail added.

The 20-storey serviced apartment block, called Fraser Residence Orchard, is in the exclusive suburb of Mount Elizabeth.

Most of the flats, worth about 300,000 pounds each, are rented out to expats on generous salaries. (IANS)

Guy who became dad at 13 marries child’s mum

London: A British guy tied the knot with his schoolgirl sweetheart, nine years after becoming father to her child just at the age of 13. Michael Fernandes, now 22, and Cheryl Holden, 24, ended all speculations that their relationship would not last, by getting married in Manchester.

They already have three sons – Liam, 8, Bryan, 3 and Archie, 1 – all of whom were taken along in the ceremony, reports the Sun.

Fernandes had proposed to Holden in 2009 but could not afford to marry until they won a competition to pay for it – and accommodate 40 guests. The prize included photographs, flowers and entertainment. (ANI)
