Agartala: Tribal students and professional bodies filed a writ petition in Guahati High Court, Agartala Bench, demanding filling up of 24 reserved medical seats in the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) by reducing cut-off mark from prescribed 40 per cent.
According to report, the petitioners made the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Tripura government as parties in the case and argued neither Tripura Joint Entrance Board’s (JEB) prospectus mention the issue of cut-off mark nor there was any such information from the government side.
The opposition Congress and Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) demanded reduction of cut-off mark for reserved categories.
The agitators pointed out that TJE Board did not announce the cut-off mark before the exam as per MCI guidelines that led to chaos in admission and left 23 seat vacant due non-availability of the students.
The Tripura government had sought advice form MCI and Union Health Ministry to manage the situation, while making it clear that the state government would not fill-up the seats from unreserved category unless they received comprehensive instruction.
Meanwhile, in a separate letter to MCI Chairman Leader of the opposition Ratan Lal Nath demanded reduction of cut-off mark for SC and ST candidates referring to the precedence of 2005. (UNI)
