3 dead, Bengal rivers breach danger mark

KOLKATA:Three people died and several rain-swollen rivers were flowing above the danger mark Wednesday in large parts of West Bengal.

With the level rising in its reservoirs, the Damodar Valley Corp (DVC) released 62,000 cusecs of water, Minister of State for Irrigation Shyamal Mandal said, inundating several areas in its catchment areas.Teesta, Mahananda, Damodar, Jalangi and Jamuna rivers were in spate damaging some embankments.

A married couple died in a wall collapse in Asansol in Burdwan district. Another death was reported from South 24 Parganas district, administration sources said.

Murshidabad, Burdwan and Birbhum districts received the largest amount of rainfall.The weatherman said the rains were likely to intensify over the next 24 hours.(IANS)

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been given,” said an officer in the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The situation was causing concern in Arambagh in Hooghly district and Udaynaraynapur and Amta in Howrah district, while parts of Malda have also been put on high alert, said Irrigation Minister Manas Bhuniya.

In South 24 Parganas district, the situation was alarming in 13 blocks with 30,000 mud houses caving in, district magistrate N.S. Nigam told IANS.
