Over 2,500 children disappeared in Delhi this year
NEW DELHI: Till July this year, as many as 2,558 children disappeared from their homes in the national capital, and Delhi Police were able to recover 1,716 of them.In a written reply, Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran said Wednesday that in 2009, about 5,946 children disappeared from Delhi, of whom 5,365 were traced and reunited with their families.In 2010, about 5,091 children went missing and police were able to find 3,937 of them, the Rajya Sabha was informed.The minister said “no specific reason” was found for the disappearance of the children.But further probe showed that some children went missing because they lost their way or left home because they were maltreated by parents.(IANS)
Infiltration into Kashmir falls
NEW DELHI: Fifty-two terrorists tried to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan till June this year, down from 489 in the whole of 2010, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Wednesday.The minister told the Rajya Sabha that the army killed two terrorists trying to breach the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir “till date in 2011”. Last year, the army killed 38 terrorists, he added.The LoC divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan, which control parts of the region.(IANS)
Withdraw Lokpal Bill from Par
NEW DELHI: Adopting a tough posture, team Anna Hazare on Wednesday asked a Parliamentary panel to recommend to the government to withdraw the Lokpal Bill and come out with a fresh measure which deals with problem of corruption faced by the public. Social activist Hazare said though the decision of the Parliamentary Committee to study the Jan Lokpal bill along with the government legislation was a “good thing”, he would continue with his August 16 indefinite fast if the panel did not take a decision by that date. “My fast is against the government and not Parliament,” he said.Hazare, senior lawyer Shanti Bhushan, his son Prashant, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi today appeared before the Standing Committee on Personnel and Law Justice to put forth their views on the government Lokpal Bill. The Lokpal Bill, introduced in Lok Sabha on August 4, has been referred to the Standing Committee on August 8 by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari who has given it three months to give recommendations. 462 corrupt officials arrested
PATNA: A total of 462 corrupt officials were arrested while taking bribes in Bihar in the last five and a half years, an official said Wednesday. “It shows the rampant corruption in government offices,” the official from the state vigilance department told IANS. He said many of the arrests took place after the state government launched a drive to weed out corruption. According to official sources, 1,375 cases of corruption and financial irregularities by officials were pending with the vigilance department. Soon after assuming office last year, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his cabinet colleagues declared their assets. The details are posted on the government’s official website.(IANS)
