NEW DELHI: Government on Wednesday attacked the opposition for stalling proceedings of Parliament “on the most frivolous ground” and ruled out curtailing the duration of the monsoon session.

“The opposition is not letting Parliament run and on the most frivolous ground. Parliament must run and transact the business,” parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said. After Parliament adjourned for the day over the issue of farmers’ killing in police firing in Pune and baton charge on Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha activists in Delhi, Bansal said the government is ready to address the opposition’s concern.

“At present, we only want, we only appeal to the opposition again please come to the House now. Don’t stall the House. Don’t make it a regular practice. We had enough of it. If there is a reason, please tell us, we will address those reasons,” he said.

Asked whether government is planning to cut short the Parliament session, Bansal said “there is no question of shortening of session at the moment”.

“We are looking forward and we would only request them to come and let us take up the business further. Let us pass the business and whatever items you have for discussion,” he said.

Bansal said government was “actually at a loss to understand” the opposition’s behaviour in Parliament.Slamming BJP for creating a ruckus in Parliament over the issue of police baton charge against their workers, Bansal said the ruling party can “point out a large number of instances during the seven-year rule of NDA when there were lathicharges at different parts of the country.
