Threat to life of PSO, MLA and families, Conrad alleges

SHILLONG: The NCP has demanded an administrative probe, to be headed by an officer not below the rank of a principal secretary, into the leakage of information about a covert police operation which has put at risk the life of the Personal Security Officer (PSO) Hubert S Marak and Kharkutta NCP MLA Omillio K Sangma with whom the PSO was attached.

“We are concerned over the media report pertaining to the operation conducted by the State Police where a policeman was planted as a mole in the GNLA camp. We fail to understand how such vital information about the operation was leaked,” Opposition leader Conrad K Sangma told reporters here on Friday.

He said that the leaked information has put at risk the life of the PSO and his family members.

“Not only the PSO, even the NCP legislator and his family members are also facing a threat to their lives since the PSO was not detached from him before he was planted in the GNLA camp,” Conrad stated.

“The fact that the Government did not even bother to inform the MLA about the police operation will now be seen as an attempt to falsely point fingers at the MLA’s involvement in this operation,” the Opposition Leader alleged.

Meanwhile, he also asked the Government to adopt a holistic and multi pronged approach to contain the growth of insurgency of the State especially in Garo Hills.

Besides carrying out operations, it is also necessary for the Government to involve leaders from all political parties to discuss issue and take immediate steps to invite the GNLA for talks, he said.

“The Government should also come up with a special economic package for the insurgency prone areas. These economic measures should target job creation especially for youth and basic infrastructure development,” Conrad added.

Kharkutta NCP MLA expresses displeasure

Meanwhile, Kharkutta NCP legislator Omillio K Sangma on Friday expressed his displeasure over the covert police strategy stating, “It is like a shock for me that my PSO was used as a mole. If it is true then the strategy was unwise because it has put someone’s life in danger.”

“If the Government had planned to use his PSO as the mole, they should have first replaced him with some other police personnel,” he stated.

“Now the family members of the PSO might be targeted and the GNLA might even suspect me of being involved in the operation of which I know nothing at all,” Sangma added.

He also mentioned that he had filed an FIR after he learnt that the PSO had gone missing and did not turn up for duty.
