SHILLONG: In a clash between two arch rivals, Shillong Lajong FC thrashed Royal Wahingdoh 4-0 to lift the Independence Day Cup 2011 in Aizawl on Friday.

Lajong went into the lead in the 10th minute through a goal scored by Zohingmingliana Ralte (Zote).

Though Lajong dominated the first half of play, many-a-chance to score went begging as the session ended with Lajong leading 1-0.

Christopher Chizoba scored the second for Lajong in the 54th minute while third goal came in the 70th minute by striker Boithang Haokip.

Lajong sealed the match after John Menyongar netted one in the 84th minute..

The tournament was organised by the Mizoram Football Association. Mizoram chief minister Lalthanhawla handed the winner’s trophy to Lajong captain Samson Ramengmawia.

Lajong’s participation in the tournament was part of the team’s preparation for the I-League season beginning in October.
