JOWAI: Situated in the heart of Jowai town, Iawmusiang is the biggest market place in Jaintia Hills district but it is observed cleanliness has been a major problem for it.

The Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and the Jowai Municipal Board are supposed to maintain the cleanliness of the town including the market places and its surroundings.

Garbage and waste products from the market are dumped on the road side just opposite to the entrance of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

It is expected either the JHADC or the Jowai Municipal Board will dispose of these waste materials.

Surprisingly, neither the JHADC nor the Jowai Municipal Board has taken any initiative in this regard.

Concerned citizens and NGOs have lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner expecting that the head of the district will do something, but it went into deaf ears.

Earlier, the Jowai Traders’ Association served notices to several hawkers asking them to maintain cleanliness but nothing positive has come out.

Shop owners also lodged a written complaint with the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner but no action is taken till date. Earlier the All Jaintia Youth Federation lodged a similar complaint.

Interestingly, a group of butchers were seen recently selling meat near the dumping area.
