Imphal: Opposing the demand of Sadar Hills Districthood by the Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC), the United Naga Council (UNC) called an indefinite bandh in the hill areas on Sunday, thus paralysing the life here.
The Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) have already been observing an indefinite strike since July 31 on the two highways of Manipur demanding district status for Sadar Hills.
Following the twin strikes, people of the state faced untold miseries as there were no petroleum products, cooking gas, life saving drugs and essential commodities due to the stir.
The Sadar Hills is now under Senapati district dominated by people of Naga tribes while Sadar Hills area is dominated by Kuki tribes.
The Naga organisations argued that Naga dominated areas should not be bifurcated by the state government in the name of administrative conveniences.
Manipur Chief Minister, Okram Ibobi Singh said the state government was mulling over the idea of creating of more districts by creating Sadar Hills and new districts at Imphal East and Ukhrul as people were not able to access government facilities and other official works due to the distance and terrain.
People from Jiribam areas had to come by flight to reach the Imphal East district headquarter for any official works as the road was in pathetic conditions.
The state government today started rationing petrol depots and few depots were opened today and only few litres of petrol were given to each vehicle.
Even for the journalists, the government provided only four litres of petrol by issuing permit.
Legal services had also been affected due to scarcity of oil and most educational institutes were also not able to function properly. (UNI)
