SHILLONG: The residents of Nongmynsong area having faced tremendous difficulties due to shortage of water over the years are all set to have water connection by February 2012.
Talking to media persons here on Saturday on the sidelines of a cleaning drive organized by the Nongmynsong Women Welfare Association, State Water Resources Minister AL Hek said around three thousand households in the area will have water connection by February next year.
“We are targeting to provide approximately 3000 households with water connection possibly before 2012 if there is no problem in implementing the scheme,” he added while speaking to scribes here on Saturday. People here have to stand in long queues for hours to avail 2-3 buckets of water in a day which is a tough task.
According to Hek, a total of Rs 7 crore has already been sanctioned for the purpose under the PHE Water Supply Scheme since 2008, during his tenure as the State PHE Minister. Hek further stated that this in tandem with the preparation of the presbytery of the Nongmynsong Presbyterian Church which is scheduled to be held later on February 2012. To take stock of the implementation process, an inspection would also be conducted on September 2 by the concerned department.
Meanwhile, in the bid to reduce the traffic congestion in the area, roads in the area would be widened.
Earlier,AL Hek also inaugurated the cleaning drive of Nongmynsong market organized by the Nongmynsong Women Welfare Association (NWWA).
