Jawan commits suicide

Imphal: A jawan on Wednesday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself by his service rifle at the Manipur commando complex near here, official sources said.

The reason for taking the extreme step by Bijen Kumar (32) of the 37th Assam Rifles was yet to be ascertained, the sources said.

The jawan hailed from Jammu and Kashmir. (PTI)

Cong welcomes Parliament resolution on Lokpal

Kohima: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Wednesday welcomed Parliament resolution on the Lokpal Bill and appreciated the Congress-led UPA government for initiating measures to bring transparency and accountability in governance.

A statement issued by the NPCC media cell here said in a state like Nagaland, corruption had become an ‘open routine affair a minister who had admitted to his misdeeds (misappropriation of funds) on the floor of the Assembly continued to enjoy his chair the thousands of teachers were appointed through dubious means and later subjected to intense scrutiny and harassment, where favoruitism, nepotism and money power had taken precedence over merit. Assam celebrates Eid with fervour

Guwahati: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across Assam on Wednesday with religious fervour and traditional pomp and gaiety.

The festival marked the end of the holy month of Ramzan with Muslims offering prayers at community fields. Sweets were exchanged as both Muslims and Hindus greeted each other after the Eid prayers. Special prayers were held for peace and harmony at various community fields. (IANS)

Tawang locals urge BRO for better roads

Itanagar: The people of Arunachal’s Tawang district, bordering Tibet province of China, have urged the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for improvement of Bhalukpong-Tawang road, the lifeline for three hilly districts of the state. In a meeting, locals complained that the bad road has affected the tourist flow. The hotel and shop owners alleged that tourist flow to the town has gone down by 80 per cent this year because of damaged road. The tourist flow had been sustained by the chopper service which has also been suspended after the death of Dorjee Khandu in a chopper crash on April 30. (PTI)

Documentary film fest begins

Agartala: A documentary, Tagore’s ode to Nature directed by Ranabir Ray, would mark the beginning of a non-competitive documentary, short and animation film festival here on Thursday. The four-day festival would also screen award winning films selected from the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films (MIFF), Films Division officer Sumoy Mukherjee said on Wednesday.
