NEW DELHI: Congress leader and party spokesperson Manish Tiwari on Wednesday rescued himself from the Parliamentary Standing Committee which is studying the Lokpal Bill.

“I support a strong, effective Lokpal Bill and have decided to rescue myself from the Lokpal Standing Committee,” Mr Tiwari told reporters here.

Mr Tiwari’s opting out of the Standing committee which is studying the Lokpal Bill comes close on the heels of the controversy generated by his statement accusing Gandhian Anna Hazare of corruption.

Addressing a press conference two days before Hazare began his fast, Mr Tiwari has said, “He (Anna) himself was involved in several cases of corruption. This has been proved by the apex court appointed Justice Sawant Commission. The commission found that Anna runs several NGOs and money was spent illegally for his birthday celebration.”

Mr Tiwari subsequently apologised to the activist and appealed to the Gandhian to call off his fast.

“I know some of my recent utterances have hurt Mr Hazare. I regret the same. In the course of political cut and thrust, certain things are inadvertently said which cause pain,” he said.(UNI)
