Rise in rape cases result of low rate of conviction: CSWO
From Our Correspondent
NONGSTOIN: Nongstoin police on Thursday arrested one Didimus Dkhar (21) of New Nongstoin,West Khasi Hills District, for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl of the same village on Wednesday night.
According to sources, Dkhar let the girl go from his house on Thursday morning after committing the crime. He even threatened the girl with dire consequences if she divulged anything to his relatives or police.
On Thursday morning some of her family members saw her coming out from Dkhar’s house.
Initially she was reluctant to divulge anything. As the family members insisted, at last she told the whole story,
Meanwhile, the CSWO has attributed low rate of conviction as the reason behind the rise in rape cases in the State, particularly in Jaintia Hills district, our reporter adds.
In a statement the CSWO general secretary Evangeline Thabah said the insensitivity of police to such crimes had led to no conviction “as cases are haphazardly investigated”. “In Jaintia Hills police do not take any action against the perpetrators if they are well connected and rich,” the CSWO alleged.
The CSWO urged the Government to take stringent steps to investigate all the rape cases, to immediately set up a separate medical unit for rape cases. The CSWO also urged the government to transfer all the rape cases to fast track courts and to give compensation to victims.
