Guwahati: Hitting out at the Congress-led Central and state governments over the land swap deal with Bangladesh, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Thursday announced a series of agitations to protest the agreement with the bordering country.

”Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi have betrayed the state by agreeing to give away Assam land to Bangladesh without consulting the people of the state or the elected representatives even,” AASU advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said here.

He added that the ‘sense of betrayal’ by these two leaders was even more acute for the people of the state since both of them represent Assam.

Dr Singh is elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam.

Dr Bhattacharyya urged the Opposition parties to take up the issue further in Parliament when the agreement comes up for ratification and ensure that no Assam land is given away to the neighbouring country without the consent of the people.

Announcing a series of agitations, AASU president Shankar Prasad Rai informed that a torchlight vigil will be taken out in all district headquarters tomorrow.

On September 10, an hour-long National Highway blockade will be carried out in all districts and on September 11 and 12, bicycle rallies will be taken out across the state.

”A protest rally will be taken out in Guwahati on September 15 and we will decide on the next series of agitation in consultation with 26 ethnic groups’ orgranisations,” Mr Rai added. India and Bangladesh had on Tuesday night signed an agreement in Dhaka to swap 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh and 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in India. (UNI)
