KSU seizes ‘bidis’ worth Rs 1.5 lakh

 JOWAI: The anti-crime cell of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Umkiang Unit seized huge quantity of ‘Bidi’ in the wee hours of Saturday when they were being smuggled to Bangladesh near Indo-Bangladesh border in Umkiang area.

The KSU-Umkiang unit President, Phanuel Tongper informed that the ‘Bidis’ meant for smuggling to Bangladesh was seized at the time when they were unloading from a vehicle bearing registration number ML04A-9405 in the border village.

A team of 15 KSU activists who were informed about the illegal activity, arrived on the spot and seized the smuggled items.

“We spotted some Bangladeshi nationals and one Khlur Sungoh but when our members arrived there, they fled away to nearby jungle”, Tongper said adding that they could only apprehend the driver and seize the vehicle along with ten bags of bidis worth Rs. 1.5 lakh.

When interrogated by the KSU members, the driver revealed that Khlur Sungoh has close connection with few Bangladeshis in this illegal business for the last many years, informed Tongper.

Later, the KSU-Umkiang handed over the seized vehicle and the driver to Umkiang Police and a police complaint lodged against Sungoh.
