Bhopal: Five organisations of survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy have called for ”Bhopal Bandh” on October 11 demanding the Centre and the state government to present ”actual figures” of health damages — caused due to the world’s worst industrial disaster — in the curative petition that would be heard in the Supreme Court soon.

”In the curative petition for compensation from Union Carbide, Dow Chemical and both the governments have presented thoroughly unscientific data on the deaths and health damage caused by the disaster,” alleged Satinath Sarangi of Bhopal Group for Information and Action.

Talking to media here, Mr Sarangi said internal documents of Union Carbide, US, and the results of the medical research — conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research — clearly showed that 93 per cent of the survivors have been wrongly categorised as ”temporarily injured” and have been wrongfully given the compensation of meagre Rs 25,000.

He said the curative petition, presented in the apex court, there was no mention of health damage to children born to gas exposed parents. “If the governments do not present correct information, even the best judges cannot do justice in the case,” Mr Sarangi pointed out.

To a query, Mr Sarangi said the organisations already wrote letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and if no action was taken, the organisations will intensify the agitation. (UNI)
