Involvement of more jawans not ruled out

Tura child sacrifice case

From Our Correspondent

TURA: Four days after the gruesome killing of a seven-year-old boy in what investigators term as a shocking case of human sacrifice to appease the gods, Tura police have arrested a BSF constable for complicity in the murder and recovered evidence including a few personal belongings of the innocent victim Krishna Singh.

The younger son of BSF water carrier Kamal Singh disappeared on the evening of October 5 while proceeding to a temple within the BSF campus to offer prayers. His body was retrieved the next morning from a desolate spot of the campus with multiple injuries.

Constable Babu Khan of 162 Bn of the BSF which is located inside the Praharinagar campus of 121 BSF Battalion was taken into police custody on Sunday evening following circumstantial evidence that connected him to the murder.

Earlier on Saturday both Babu Khan and another jawan, Hawildar Chandrawan of 121 Bn of BSF were interrogated for several hours by the investigating team.

While Chandrawan acknowledged coming to know the Mancachar-based maulvi or tantrik called Lukman Haqib, on the other hand, Babu Khan continued to maintain his innocence even going to the extend of feigning ignorance about the fake godman.

Chandrawan had revealed during interrogation that the tantrik even came to his quarters with Babu Khan to sort out the problem of marriage proposal of his second daughter.

Call detail records of Babu Khan and the Tantrik have proved beyond doubt that the two were in constant touch with one another on the day the young boy disappeared.

The involvement of more BSF jawans has not been ruled out by the police after the call records revealed that the tantrik was also in contact with four other jawans last week.

“More arrests are expected in the coming days as more evidence begin to surface,” said Inspector General of Police GHP Raju.

The top officer has been supervising the entire investigation from day one paying a daily visit to the BSF camp and going through the investigation details to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book.

With the arrest of Babu Khan the focus of the investigation will now turn on the maulvi from Mancachar town in Dhubri district of Assam.

Police have so far been unsuccessful in getting the tantrik back to Tura for interrogation. A team that was dispatched to pick him up had to beat a hasty retreat after a mob of several thousand people mobbed the team and the police station threatening violence if their godman was taken away.
