70 ill in Upper Assam due to food poisoning

Dibrugarh: Around 70 people, including women and children, were taken ill due to food poisoning in Chabua town of upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district, official sources said on Tuesday.

25 of them were taken to St lukes Hospital at Chabua, while the rest, including 15 critically ill children were admitted to the Assam Medical College Hospital here, the sources said.

Doctors at the hospital did not rule out the victims of having eaten stale and rotten food items even as they suspected that poisoning of food items could also be due to the fermentation of rice items in view of the prevailing hot weather condition. Sources informed that the victims had consumed food items prepared with rice in the house of one person at Rajabari village along Chabua town on Monday. By early morning on Tuesday the victims began vomiting and complained of severe stomach upsets forcing them to be admitted to hospital. (PTI)
