Karimganj: Altogether 13,000 bottles of cough syrup phensedyl worth Rs 9.75 lakh meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh were seized by the BSF in Assam’s Karimganj district.

On specific intelligence inputs, a BSF and police joint search operation was carried out in the house of one suspect Abdul Sukur at village Nayagram Chorgula and the large number of phensedyl bottles were seized on Monday, BSF sources said on Tuesday.

The bottles were to be smuggled out through the neighbouring Tripura to Bangladesh. The smuggler was apprehended and during his preliminary questioning Abdul Sukur claimed Abdul Malik of Basantpur in the district was the kingpin of the smuggling racket.

Abdul Malik was also earlier apprehended by a joint BSF and police team for the same offence on August 31 last year, sources said. The apprehended person along with the seized phensedyl bottles were handed over to Karimganj police station for further investigation. (PTI)
