Five arrested in assault case

SHILLONG: Police on Wednesday arrested five persons in connection with the recent incident of assault at Mawkisyiem in Sohra where two persons died while a third suffered grievous injuries. The arrested persons have been identified as Goldwan Sawian, Anthony Jyrwa, Rocky Syiem, Parron Diengdoh and Shyrwat Hujon.

It may be recalled that residents of Mawkisyiem village intercepted a Maruti car (ML-04-3899) and accosted three persons travelling in it – Batskhem Rynjah, 30, Rokis Nongkynrih, 28, and Warless Nongrum, 33 of Nongkynrih, Laitlyngkot while they were carrying a cattle inside the car.

The villagers assaulted them, suspecting them to be menshohnohs (cut-throats). Following the assault, Nongrum died on same day while Rynjah succumbed to his injuries the following day. Nongkynrih’s condition is still stated to be critical.

It may be mentioned in relation to another incident at Maraikaphon where a mentally-retarted person, Timing Khongsit of Laitlynkgkot, was allegedly murdered by the villagers suspecting him to be a menshohnoh, police had arrested ten persons and remanded them in seven-day police custody.
