Kathmandu: Thirty-six people were killed Thursday when the bus they were travelling in fell off a cliff in Nepal, police and eyewitnesses said.
The bus went off the Riththebhir cliff along the Khurkot-Nepalthok road section of the Banepa-Sindhuli Highway in central Nepal Thursday, Xinhua reported.
The bodies were been laid on the bank of the Sunkoshi river, some 80 km south of Kathmandu.
A TV channel put the toll at 38. Eleven passengers who were travelling on the roof of the bus survived by jumping off the roof, the TV channel reported quoting an eyewitness.
The accident took place at around 10 a.m. Thursday.
Most of the bus passengers were returning to capital Kathmandu after celebrating the Dashain festival in their hometown, according to myrepublica.com.
It was reported that the overcrowded bus skidded due to the poor road condition. (IANS)
