SHILLONG: The State Police has decided to come down heavily on rumour mongers who have, of late, created a sense of panic among residents of the city. Police is following specific inputs to zero in on those people who are involved in rumour mongering.

“We have got specific inputs about some people involved in spreading ugly rumours. At the moment I cannot disclose anything as we are working on these inputs to nab the culprits,” SP (City) M Kharkrang told reporters on Thursday.

Kharkrang, however, informed that police has intensified patrolling especially in the market areas to prevent any attempts of disrupting law and order in the city.

“We are not taking this matter lightly. We will bring to book all those who are responsible for creating unrest and confusion,” the SP (City) said, adding, it was unfortunate that such things should happen especially when the Puja celebrations have passed off peacefully.

Asked if police had established the motive behind the rumours, Kharkrang said it would be difficult to specify the motive unless police gets to the root of the issue.

He however urged upon the general public to inform the police if the encounter any suspected elements involved in spreading rumours.
