Minor speeding on scooter injures cop
NEW DELHI:A head constable’s leg was fractured when a minor boy on a scooter hit him in south Delhi, police said Monday.The boy, a Class 10 student and a resident of Govindpuri, was Sunday riding a scooter near Nehru Place when the incident took place. He was caught soon after he hit traffic policeman Bhim Singh.”The scooter was found to be in the name of the errant minor’s father,” police said.”The boy jumped a red light at a traffic signal. When the traffic policeman tried to stop him, the boy got scared and hit him, before driving over his leg,” a Delhi police officer said.(IANS)
Jaya for immediate notification of SC verdict on Cauvery
CHENNAI:Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday demanded that the Centre immediately notify the 2007 final verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal to make it effective and binding on states concerned.In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, she said that Karnataka, the upper riparian state, had been holding that the final order dated February 5, 2007 (which has not been notified), should be considered as “protem”, governing regime on all matters including distress sharing and irrigated areas in Karnataka. She said Karnataka had also stated that this suggestion should not be understood as its acceptance of the correctness of the final order of the Tribunal. “In these circumstances, it is incumbent on the government of India to notify the final order of the Tribunal in the Gazette of India for it to become effective and binding on the parties to the dispute and a mechanism for the implementation of the final order to be established,” she said recalling a memorandum presented to the prime minister during their meeting in Delhi after she took over as chief minister. Anna denies rift in his team
NEW DELHI: Anna Hazare on Monday denied reports of a rift in his team and said it “will stand united”.”Nothing will affect our integrity — neither the negative publicity doing rounds about Team Anna and nor the factors trying to create a rift in our team. Team Anna will stand united and strive hard for implementation of the Jan Lokpal bill,” Hazare said in his latest blog posting.The activist’s remarks came in the wake of news reports of differences in Team Anna after close aide Prashant Bhushan’s controversial remarks favouring a plebiscite in Kashmir.Hazare’s statement that the core committee will decide on the continuance of Prashant Bhushan had taken the team by surprise.Though he is under a vow of silence — maun vrat — the activist also said in his blog that he will work with the Congress across the country if the UPA government brings a strong Lokpal Bill in the winter session of parliament and keeps its words on other reforms.(IANS)
Mamata requests Pranab to raise MSP for jute
KOLKATA:West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday requested Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to to increase the minimum support price for jute.”I rang up Pranab Mukherjee, who heads a Group of Ministers on the issue, and urged him to address the problems faced by jute farmers by enhancing the minimum support price for procurement of jute by the Jute Corporation of India,” Banerjee told reporters hereon Monday.While the minimum support price offered by the JCI to jute farmers is Rs 1,700 per quintal, the farmers have to incur Rs 2,400 per quintal towards production cost, she said.”Earlier, I also wrote a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on August 21, urging him to look into the grievances of jute farmers and ensure that they got a good return on their produce by maximising the minimum support price,” she said. However, she regretted that Pawar had declined to make any commitment in this regard. Describing the issue as sensitive, Banerjee said that the jute farmers in Assam had recently held an agitation to highlight their problems.(PTI)
