SHILLONG: The inauguration of the women’s hostel, Mamma Margaret Hall of St Anthony’s College by the Union Minister of DoNER PS Ghatowar at its premises here on Tuesday comes as a blessing for students from the rural areas as well as other states of the country and abroad.

“St Anthony’s College has always had a hostel for men called Stephen Hall and there is a felt need to provide similar facilities for women. This will be helpful for the less privileged and economically disadvantaged girl students from the rural areas and those coming from the other parts of the country”, Union Minister of DoNER PS Ghatowar observed.

Interestingly, Ghatowar is a former student of the college where he pursued his studies in Political Science from 1966 to 1968. “After 43 years, I have observed that this college has grown from a small plant to a big banyan tree and has managed to cater not only to the young boys but also young girls of the state”, he said.

The union minister also stated that in the context of empowering women, the government of India has initiated different schemes and projects.

Stating that employment is still a challenge in the country, Ghatowar said in this corporate world, young people with the right kind of skills and knowledge are the mostly preferred, adding that it is important for students to get the basic skills in consonance with the market needs.

Funds for constructing this hostel was sanctioned by the Ministry of DoNER and UGC.

The 2 crore project has a total capacity of 120 seats. The hostel is managed by sisters from the MSMHC.
