SHILLONG: In an apparent bid to check crimes and illegal activities taking place inside vehicles with tainted glasses, the State Traffic branch has decided not to allow vehicles with tinted glasses to ply on the streets.

Taking strong cognizance of the fact that many crimes are taking place inside vehicles with tainted glasses, the State police is now contemplating stringent actions against car owners who put black shades on their vehicles.

Director General of Police N Ramachandran, on Friday, stated that police will soon launch a drive against those who violate the Motor Vehicles Act by using dark shades on the window glasses of their vehicles.

In the past, several crimes against women have taken place and many a time, criminals use vehicles with dark shades to perpetrate their crimes.

Police has asked all vehicle owners to discontinue using lumar (a special kind of film pasted on the wind shields of vehicles).

“In Shillong more than half of the vehicles have dark tinted glasses and we will soon initiate action against such vehicle owners” Ramchandran added.

Despite an earlier ban on use of dark shades, a majority of private vehicle owners continue to use tinted glasses.
