New Delhi: With some opposition chief ministers accusing the UPA government of step-motherly treatment, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Saturday asserted that the central government did not discriminate among states and all of them were treated fairly.

In his concluding remarks at the National Development Council meeting here, the prime minister said that some states had raised concern about discrimination but it was not based on reality. “The centre is determined to treat all states fairly,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr Singh said the Central government tends to provide more support to poorer states but it does not mean discrimination.

“It is true, that we tend to provide more support to the poor states, but that does not mean that we are discriminating against more advance states.”

“If there is a perception of discrimination, it is a perception and not based on reality,” he said.

Some opposition chief ministers, including J Jayalalithaa, had in their speeches at the NDC meeting accused the United Progressive Alliance government of step-motherly treatment. (IANS)
