M’laya student dies in mishap in Nepal

 Shillong: In a tragic incident, one student from Meghalaya studying at the Mar Gregorios Arts and Science College, Chennai died along with another student of the same institute during an educational tour in Nepal on Saturday.

One of the deceased Amida G Momin hailed from Meghalaya while the other mishap victim was identified as Florence Angel. The incident took place when the victims along with ten other students fell into the Trishuli river near Kathmandu in Nepal following the collapse of a suspension bridge.

A group of 42 Post Graduate students including two from Meghalaya (Amida G Momin and Kalpang Stone, who was also injured) left for Nepal on October 12 on an educational tour. The students were travelling to Pokhara in a bus. On seeing the hanging bridge, some of the students stopped the bus and stepped onto the weak bridge. Most of the others, who remained behind in suddenly witnessed the bridge collapsing and the students falling down below into the river.

The body of 21-year-old Momin, a Social Work department student, was swept away by the strong current after she fell into the river. Her body was recovered on Sunday morning.

However, when The Shillong Times contacted the college sources, they denied the reports saying “We cannot confirm her death as her body has not been recovered till now.”

Meanwhile, Kalpang Stone and eight others B Ramesh, Sindhu Jha, Balaji, Christopher, Sigdi, Jack, U Sylvie and Priya (all from Tamil Nadu) escaped with injuries.
