Editor,

The management of Sankardev College, Shillong strongly refute the allegations leveled by one P Lyngdoh on the internal affairs of the College in your letters column(ST Oct 24, 2011).The College in its objective of rendering quality education and providing the students with an atmosphere conducive to their growth and learning, also strongly upholds discipline virtues and has been particularly stern whenever need be. It would not be a misjudgement to construe that the author of the letter has possibly been subjected to some disciplinary action and is thus venting his/her displeasure in this manner, which is reflective of his/her disregard for the established norms and procedures of the institution. However while we do respect one’s freedom of expression, we don’t accept its intention which is to malign the hard earned image and credibility of the Institution.

Fines are a legal means of infusing respect for rules and regulations, be it Traffic Rules or College Rules. However in the interest of the 1600 students of the College, the thousands of Alumni and the Teaching faculty who have extended exemplary and selfless dedicated service to the cause this Institution, this clarification is therefore warranted.

The institution has served for 50 years and stands with a reputation of impeccable integrity.

From a humble beginning of only 14 students and 7 part time staff it has grown to the position it stands today. This speaks for itself.

Yours etc.,

K. Chyne

Vice Principal,

Sankardev College, Shillong

 Who’s the writer

 Editor,

Apropos the letter from PL Lyngdoh on ‘Controversial land deal’ (ST Oct 22, 2011) I request the editor to kindly publish in the next issue, the full name, address, and contact number of the writer. If possible, kindly let me know whether the writer is a he, or a she. The writer does not seem to be from Malki, as his/her name does not appear in the list of adult residents of Malki. As for the land in question, the writer may have to clarify his/her statement, which contradicts the statement of the Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), East Khasi Hills District in The Shillong Times of 16-Oct-2011.

Yours etc.,

H.P. Oflyn Dohling

Shillong – 1

Editor replies: Letters are published in larger public interest, more so since Mr HP Oflyn Dohling is a public figure. This paper provides space for countering allegations or giving clarifications without having to disclose the details of the letter writer.
