SHILLONG: In the bid to make the traditional Wangala dance festival more attractive, the State Government has sanctioned Rs 14.57 lakh to the organising committee.

Handing over the cheque, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said, “the Wangala festival does play an important role in bringing tourists from all over the country to the State”.

The State Government decided to make the contribution in its endeavour to promote the cultural identity, he said.

The festival, which is considered as a thanks giving ceremony to Misi Saljong (The great river), will be celebrated from November 10-12 and a large number of tourists are expected to throng the place during the festival.

“Meghalaya should play the lead role in the North East with regard to tourism sector,” Dr Sangma said while adding “the Government is joining hands with other neighbouring states to boost the tourism scenario in the North East region”.

PR Marak, a member of the organizing committee, said ten teams will participate in the festival. A team from Bangladesh is also likely to participate in the festival.
