12 killed in accident in Gujarat

Junagadh: Twelve persons were killed and 21 injured on Saturday in a head-on collision between a minibus and a truck near Gadu village in the district. “A minibus going to Veraval collided with a truck comingh from opposite direction near Gadu village. Five persons were killed on the spot and seven died either on way to the hospital or during treatment,” police said. At least 21 others were injured, and are being treated at the hospital in Veraval. Only yesterday, 21 people, including 11 women, had been killed in a similar head-on collision between a speeding truck and a tractor in the Panchmahal district of the state. (PTI)

Five dead in Gujarat road mishap

Junagadh: Five persons were killed and 15 injured when a mini bus collided with a truck near here. The mishap occurred near Gadu village. “A mini city bus on way to Veraval collided with a truck near Gadu village. At least five persons died and around 15 to 20 suffered injuries,” police said. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Veraval. (PTI)

Twin mishaps claim four lives

Muzaffarnagar (UP): Four persons were killed in two separate accidents in the district, police said on Saturday. A speeding truck crushed two persons to death while they were returning from Bhai Dooj celebration near Pathanpura village here last evening. “Ombir (24) and Reshu (14) were killed when a speeding truck collided with their motorcycle,” the police said. Two more persons were killed in a separate accident in another part of the district. The victims were identified as Shishpal [45] and Satish (35). (PTI)

Woman’s body found in Nalasopara

Mumbai: The body of an unidentified woman was found hanging in an under-construction building at Nalasopara in adjoining Thane district, police said. After preliminary investigations, Nalasopara police believe that it is a rape-and-murder case. Police have detained three people including the site supervisor in this connection. On wednesday night, an unknown person called at the police station to inform that he has seen a woman’s nude body hanging on the fourth floor of the building. Police immediately rushed to the spot and took possession of the body. which was sent for post-mortem. The woman was initially raped and then murdered before her body was hung from iron rods, police sources said. (UNI)

70-hr Bible reading session underway

Chennai: As many as 325 devout Christians are attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records and the Limca Book of Records by reading the Holy Bible continuously for 70 hours from the first to the last page at the Infant Jesus Church at Manali Pudunagar, near here. The Bible reading session began on October 27 in the presence of Vichur Panchayat President Wesley and Father Jospeh Manickam. The session, spread over three days, would involve reading from 73 books comprising 1910 pages spread over 1339 sections. The session would come to a close tomorrow, according to the organisers of the event. (UNI)

Army foils infiltration bid

Jammu: Army troops today foiled an infiltration bid along Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. Troops guarding the borderline observed movement of three suspected militants who were trying to enter the Indian side in Chamba gap forward defence location in Laam belt around 0200 hours, a senior army officer said. Army immediately deployed its ambush parties which opened fire on the infiltrators, he said, adding that they were forced back to Pakistan side. (PTI)

5 killed in road mishap

Lucknow: Five persons, including three women, were killed and six others injured when a bus collided with a truck in Meerut district, police said on Saturday. The incident took place on Garhmukteshwar road in Mundali police station area on Friday, killing the five persons on the spot, they said. (PTI)

Two killed in slum fire

New Delhi: Two people, including a minor, were killed and five injured when a fire broke out in a slum cluster in south Delhi Saturday, police said. Shaheen Khatun, 25, and Shakeer, 3, were killed in the blaze suspected to have been sparked by an electrical short circuit, police said. “The incident was reported around 4.15 a.m. Saturday when a fire broke out in a slum cluster in Joga Bai Extension in Okhla area,” said a police official. Rare gold coins recovered in Andhra

Hyderabad: Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Mahabubnagar district Saturday recovered 73 more gold coins believed to be of Vijayanagara dynasty. With this, the number of gold coins recovered since Oct 26 has gone up to 208. As many as 135 coins were recovered from the villagers of Kalagotla on Diwali. The coins weighing one to three grams each were found by some villagers while removing weeds on farm land. They reportedly distributed the coins among themselves. Police rushed to the village after some people informed them about the recovery of the rare coins. They conducted more searches in the village on Saturday and recovered 73 coins from the villagers.
