Mumbai: Owing to changing sartorial tastes and preferences, Bollywood fashion designers have to walk a tightrope in ‘dressing up’ the characters according to vogue and at the same time have to ensure that their “output” on screen is not out-of-sync.

Talking to PTI, designer Kunal Rawal who dressed up Akshay Kumar for upcoming flick Desi Boyz has observed that even though fashion trends have always been the USP of movies, the decade of 1990s was a “conflicted decade” in terms of fashion.

“But, the shift has become very vocal of late,” he said.

According to Kumar, filmmakers have realised that dresses are as important as any other aspect of film making.

“There are group discussions on how each and every shot should go. Designers participate in every meeting with the director of photography (DOP) and the film director. We have realised that this is a group effort. The need of the hour is maximum output and for the benefit of the movie, we have to incorporate each others’ job,” he added.

With Bollywood making different kinds of movies catering to vivid spectrum of audience, fashion has to be shown subtly.

“Clothes should push the performances and the film. An actor will not feel the part of the project he is in a wrong environment, including clothes. Fashion has to be timely and real to what is being shown on screen,” Rawal informed.

About Desi Boyz, the fashion designer said the film was different compared to his debut film Ayesha. “In Ayesha, each character had a different body language and a strong fashion sense.

While in Desi Boyz, Akshay Kumar’s character is based in London and does not have a refined fashion sense,” he said.

“It was an good experience to design clothes for a tall, handsome man like Akshay having chiseled looks,” Rawal said adding he gelled well with the actor. Kunal had designed clothes for actor Vijay and actress Iliana for the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots directed by Shankar. His last Telugu release was Dookudu where he designed the look of Mahesh Babu.
