Kohima: Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday called upon all sections of society, especially public servants, to rededicate themselves to promoting transparency in society and the system so as to enhance the level of awareness among the people in eradicating corruption.
In a message on the eve of Vigilance Week beginning today, the Governor described corruption as bribery and abuse of power for personal gain.
He lamented that it has become deeply entrenched in society and the system of a country whose motto is ‘Satyameva Jayte’ or ‘Truth Alone Triumphs’.
He said the Naga society, once known for its simplicity, hospitality, and honesty, had completely changed.
Pointing out that although the state Vigilance Commission had actively involved in tackling cases of corruption, frauds etc in the functioning of the government machinery, the Governor reminded that it was also the duty of every citizen of the country to remove corruption from the system.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his message reminded that India still ranked 84th in corruption perception index as per the survey carried out by the Transparency International in 2009.
He pointed out that corruption was responsible for alienation of sections of the society, inefficiency and disruption of services besides perpetuating inequality, causing poverty, human suffering. (PTI)
