NE girls subject to indecent frisking: Mooshahary

 NEW DELHI: In a shocking disclosure Governor of Meghalaya, Ranjit Sekhar Mooshahary mentioned that girls from the Northeast are subjected to “indecent” behaviour during  frisking at airports specially in New Delhi.

Speaking at the Governors’ conference which concluded here on Sunday Mooshahary said that he has received complains from the girls and their parents in Meghalaya that they were subjected to indecent frisking in airports by the security personnel.

Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh who was present in the conference intervened to say that this is a very serious and sensitive matter and the Government will take immediate steps.

Mooshahary and few other governors also raised about ragging of NE students in educational institutions in other parts of the country.

Ragging is not there in tribal culture but our student are subjected to this menace in other parts of the country which is equally alarming, he said.

The Prime Minister quoting Supreme Court’s clear directions is sued in May 2009 for curbing incidents of ragging said his government had taken several steps to check the practice.

 ”This has to be seen in the general context of complaints of discriminatory treatment to our citizens from North Eastern states when they choose to live in other parts of the country.”

He assured that the UPA government stands committed to the physical and emotional integration of our northeastern states into the mainstream of development.

“I would request the Home Minister to look into these issues again and do whatever more is required to address them,” he said.

The practice of subjecting promising young men and women to physical, psychological and emotional abuse cannot be tolerated in any civilized society, Dr Singh said.

 We must collectively do everything that is required to end this menace, he said.
