NONGSTOIN: A big parachute, which fell down from the sky at Siejlieh village in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills district on Wednesday morning, led to a commotion in this sleepy little village.

Villagers, who witnessed the unmanned parachute landing in their village, noticed a white box attached to the parachute and mistook it for a bomb, leading to a chaotic situation.

A police team, led by the Superintendent of Police and the OC, Nongstoin police station, on learning of the incident, rushed to the spot with a bomb disposal squad.

Police, later, identified the parachute as belonging to the Indian Meteorological Department, which regularly sends such parachutes into the upper reaches of the atmosphere to collect data on weather.

The police team also found out that the parachute, which was leaking from the edges, fell down to the ground as the batteries had exhausted.
