40 police stations to tackle crime

PATNA: To tackle cases relating to crime against women, the Bihar government on Thursday sanctioned creation of 40 police stations dedicated fully to women.

The cabinet approved the creation of such police stations one each in 38 revenue districts and two police districts of Bagha and Naugachhia, state cabinet coordination department secretary Ravikant said.

To man the police stations, a proposal to create 643 posts, including 21 inspectors, 121 SIs, 101 ASIs, 80 havildars and 324 constables, was also accepted.

A sum of Rs 25.44 crore was expected to be spent on setting up the police stations, he said.

According to latest official statistics, a total of 6790 cases of crime and atrocities on women have been registered in Bihar this year so far. Out of them, 795 cases are of rape, 2552 of kidnapping, 104 of eve-teasing, 1307 of dowry death and 2032 of dowry torture.

The state government also decided to renew the contract of 16,300 Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) jawans for another five years from 2011, Ravikant said.

The cabinet also gave its nod to a proposal to convene Winter Session of both the Houses of state Legislature between December 2 and December 9, 2011. (PTI)
