Kalam to visit nuclear power plant

Chennai: Eminent scientist and former President A P J Abdul Kalam will visit the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) on Sunday to have a first hand information on the safety measures put in place in the reactors.

Sources close to Dr Kalam said, the main idea of the former President’s visit to the plant, which has run into rough weather with the locals intensifying their agitation demanding that it be scrapped, was to verify for himself the safety features incorporated in the nuclear plant.

After visiting the KKNP, Dr Kalam was expected to come out with a report on the atomic power plants located in the coastal areas, the sources added.

”Dr Kalam had visited the power plant earlier as also the other atomic power plants located on the coast,” the sources added.

Dr Kalam’s visit comes amid reports that the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), which is at the forefront of the ongoing agitation, would not hold talks with Dr Kalam on the nuclear plant row.

“We are ready to welcome Dr Kalam as a reputed scientist and honour him. But we will not hold talks with him on Koodankulam row,” PMANE Convenor Dr S P Udayakumar said.

Sources close to Dr Kalam said, after visiting the plant, the former President was even willing to meet the the agitators and address their safety concerns if a meeting was arranged. (UNI)
