Agartala: The Tripura Manipuri Chhatra Yuba Coordination Committee (TMCYCC) has launched a demonstration at Agartala supporting the demand of Ms Irom Sharmila, the Iron Lady of Manipur who has been fasting for repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 (AFSPA).

Expressing solidarity with the cause of her fasting, TMCYCC organised demonstration on the street and held a candlelight rally in the city yesterday. The demonstration was on for the second day today.

They termed AFSPA a draconian law and stated that the experience of AFSPA in Manipur was a worst episode, which virtually had compelled the people to raise voice against it.

”The most inhuman act of Army in Manipur in 2000 had prompted Sharmila to go on hunger strike demanding repeal of AFSPA and she has refused food and water for more than 500 weeks, making her the longest hunger striker in the world,” said TMCYCC leaders. AFSPA has been invoked in several police station areas in Tripura.

Meanwhile, Sharmila was produced before the court in Imphal yesterday and remanded to judicial custody since she maintained that she would continue her fast unto death if the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 would not be repealed. (UNI)
