Maoist held by police

SAMBALPUR: The Sambalpur Police have arrested another veteran Maoist cum cadre base rebel Bisi Pradhan from Mudtal village under Jujomura police station on Sunday and forwarded him to the court. Police on Monday said Bisi Pradhan was engaged in conspiracy against the local police in their movement against Maoists, collecting funds for the organisation, providing all sorts of support to them, alluring local youths to join the cadres and organising camps in the forest villages. Bisi was arrested twice on the same charges in the past and was released on bail after staying four years in jail. Police believe that he might have returned to mainstream again as he did contract jobs under various government department. But the presence of Maoist leader Girish Mahato from Jharkhand has given fresh lease of life to the old cadres again. Bisi was also involved in the murder of Meghpal Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Kadar Singh on January 23, 2003. The fresh efforts of the Maoists from Jharkhand to strengthen the organisation in the Western Odisha region have emerged as a challenge before the local police. (UNI)

Police opens tear gas on students

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed at the Osmania University (OU) campus when police opened tear gas shells on the students after they hurled stones for preventing the rally taken out by them. Police sources said the trouble erupted when the OU students in mark as a protest over the death of OU PG student took out a rally from OU Arts College to Tarnaka. When the police prevented their rally, the students enraged on it started raining stones on them. The police personnel then lobbed teargas shells on the students to bring the situation under control, the sources said. Earlier, the PG student reportedly committed suicide under a train at Manchiryal in Adilabad district this morning for the cause of Telangana state. (UNI)

Smugglers nabbed with rare herbs

DEHRADUN: Two smugglers with five gunny bags full of rare herbs found in the upper Himalayan reaches, were nabbed in Uttarkashi district on Monday when they were trying to flee from the district. According to SP Uttarkashi, Sadanand Date, the police received a tip-off that some smugglers were planning to take some rare herbs from Govind Pashu Vihar to Delhi. Police came in action and nabbed the smugglers when they were waiting for a bus to take these herbs outside the district. The nabbed miscreants were identified as Mahipal Singh and Kanwar Singh, resident of Mori, Uttarkashi, with five gunny bags full of the herbs including Slem Panja and Atees. They were nabbed at the National Highway, Naugaon, Damta. The SP Date said the herbs were estimated to be in lakhs of rupees. Police had booked a case against both of the accused. (UNI)

Four supari killers arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad police arrested four Supari killers on the charge of murdering a person for gain, Police Commissioner Dr K Ramachandra Rao said on Monday. In a release here he said the arrested were identified as Noor Ahamed, Sayyad Yusuf Bellary, Nasir Ahamed and Shabbir. Nusrat Jabin, the wife of and also owner of Ahamadiya Engineering Factory Munvar Ahamd Mirji has lodged a complaint on October 21 that her husband was missing and did not return home after his work. After thorough investigation the body of Munvar was found in water tank of the factory and the police suspected it as murder. The Inspector of Old Hubli Police Station Sachin Chalvadi who led the investigation along with his team was successful in unearthing the conspiracy of murder. The brothers of Munvar was allegedly involved in the plot and had hired the killers. There was said to be dispute over the property and the brothers were jealous of Munvar for prosperity. Thus they hatched a conspiracy to kill Munvar and gave Supari to kill him. All the accused have been sent to judicial custody. (UNI)

MLA booked for slapping villager

MEDAK (AP): Police registered a case against Sangareddy Congress MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy on Sunday in connection with slapping of a villager during the rachabanda programme at Sadasivpet in the district on November 5. The MLA slapped a villager Balaraj when he made a complaint during the programme on the inferior quality of rice supplying by ration shops under Rs 1-a-kg scheme launched in the state on November 1. The incident occurred in the presence of police and public. Section under 323 and 504 cases were booked against Congress MLA by the Sadasivpet police following a complaint received from Balraj. Truck run over a child

BARRACKPORE (WB): An eight-year old boy was ran over by a truck on Kalyani expressway at Dopere under Khardah police station in North 24 Parganas district Monday afternoon. The victim, S Ali Khan, a resident of nearby Arpatna village was crossing the road when the speedy truck rammed him and ran over. The fleeing truck was however held at Sodepur- Madhyamgram Road crossing. Agitated over the incident, angry people vandalised the truck and handed over the driver to the police. (UNI)
