‘Secret killings’ by ANVC

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The report on the ‘secret killings’ by the A’chik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) militants will be submitted before the State Cabinet for further discussions.

Informing this here on Wednesday, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said that the matter will be placed in the next Cabinet meeting for further discussion.

The one-man inquiry committee headed by Commissioner and Secretary (Commissioner of Division Tura) Peter W Ingty submitted its report to the State Government last month.

Reacting to a query about the findings of the report, the Chief Secretary refused to comment on the matter saying it is inappropriate to discuss the report before the Cabinet looks at it.

The State Government ordered for the probe after the militant outfit Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) accused the ANVC of masterminding ‘secret killings’ of several Garo youths.

However, in the month of September a major excavation at two ANVC camps in Tura and Samanda to investigate allegations of ‘secret killings’ and mass graves leveled by the GNLA failed to yield any results.

It may be reminded that the forensic teams from Shillong had visited two sites in Garo Hills for investigation but the teams failed to recover any human remains.

When contacted, ANVC spokesperson Torik Jangning Marak also refused to comment on the allegations leveled by the GNLA.

“We would not like to comment on the findings of the panel as we have not received any copy of the panel report,” Marak added here on Wednesday.

The GNLA which accused the ANVC of ‘secret killings’ had, however, demanded an independent probe by a sitting or retired judge of the Gauhati High Court.
