Editor,
The new traffic rule near Civil Hospital junction has created more chaos especially in the morning and evening hours when the Shillong Traffic Police commence their duties and close shop. At such times vehicles tend to take whatever route they deem fit. This is a daily occurrence at the junction and the STP themselves know it. Surprisingly, though many have pointed out to the impracticality of this traffic rule through the local news dailies and also through the STP Facebook there has been no response. At the risk of sounding cynical I would like to ask whether it is a good practice to place the ‘No Entry’ signboard (8:00 am – 8:00 pm) and the barricades in the morning and then removing them at 8 pm. It’s like a shopkeeper opening and closing shop. Understandably, the police department is short of man power but what one fails to understand is why the particular traffic rule is not implemented 24×7 so that there is no confusion. If a similar one way rule can be maintained at the Kachari junction, IGP point and Khyndai Lad 24X7 then why not at the Civil Hospital junction? I want to ask the police department whether traffic rules should be applicable only during the day in Shillong. The STP should come up with workable solutions which should be applied round the clock.

Complaint against kerosene sub dealer
Editor,
Through your esteemed daily, I would like to bring to the fore the dealings of the kerosene sub dealer (W. Phanbuh) here in Lower Lachumiere. We the ration card holders of Lachumiere who are dependent on kerosene for cooking are facing great difficulties because the notice for distribution of kerosene is displayed only about half an hour ( that too in odd hours after say after 1 pm when most people have left for work) before the distribution of kerosene. Most of us do not know that kerosene is being distributed on that particular day. Several requests have been made to the Supply Department by other residents of Lachumiere stating that at least one full day’s advance notice should be displayed by the sub dealer but no action has been taken by the Department. Also it is noticed that the sub dealer does not display the notice in a prominent places, visible to all consumers. The notice is put up only in one or two places. I urge upon the authorities concerned to look into this matter and resolve it at the earliest.

Pensioners’ grievances
Editor,
Apropos the news item “Pay, arrears by X-mas (ST October 20, 2011) it was reported that the Government has already released the arrears to those employees who have retired or are retiring during 2010-2011. The above news is totally untrue, baseless and unfounded as we the aggrieved pensioners who retired between mid/late 2010-2011, have not yet received the above 30% arrears till date. We humbly appeal to the Government of Meghalaya to kindly release the pending arrears before Christmas 2011 as we the pensioners and our families face extreme financial distress at this juncture when inflation is at its peak.
