St Edmund’s College players receive the trophy from Paul Lyngdoh (MLA) after winning the Inter College Cricket final against Shillong College on Saturday

SHILLONG: St.Edmund’s College defeated Shillong College by 24 runs in the final of the Inter College Cricket Tournament 2011 organised by the Shillong Cricket Association in collaboration with MCA & APPH Publishers at the Cricket Ground,Polo on Saturday.

St.Edmund’s won the toss and elected to bat on a cold overcast morning. The openers started well but a middle order collapse mitigated the team’s chances of posting a big total.

St Edmund’s scored a modest total of 99 for the loss of 10 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Swarajeet Das (23) again came good with the bat scoring steadily and was ably supported by Rohit Thapa (17). Shillong College bowled and fielded tightly as Sylvester and Arvind took two wickets apiece.

In reply,Shillong College lost the opener Sylvester early but a steady innings of 33 of 37 balls by Lambha Khongphai and Maniram Sharma’s 12 of 26 almost got them through. However, Dipankar Dutta claimed three wickets in his first over to bring the Edmundians back into the match.

Later Krishna and Swarajeet took two wickets each to dash their opponent’s hopes of a possible victory. Shillong College were bundled out for a paltry 75 in 18.1 overs.

St Edmund’s College dedicated the victory to Prof Late Conrad Khongwir who last led the college to victory in 1991.

The man-of-the-match award went to Dipankar Dutta and the man-of-the tournament went to Swarajeet Das, both from St.Edmund’s College.

The prizes were given by Paul Lyngdoh,MLA and patron of the Shillong Cricket Association, besides other dignitaries.
