MeECL accused of neglect

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) is in the news once again for the wrong reasons. This time the Corporation has been castigated for not maintaining a children’s park that was constructed to provide space for recreation facilities for children from as many as 300 families residing in the MeECL colony at Umiam.

Residents of the colony said that the children’s park, constructed two years back at a cost of Rs 7 lakh, is in a dismal condition these days due to lack of maintenance.

The residents also pointed out that before the park was constructed, the venue was used for various social and religious gatherings and sports activities. But the sorry state of the park drives away visitors these days, they alleged.

When contacted, Principal Chief Engineer, MeCEL, Elias Lyngdoh, said that that the park has not been officially inaugurated as yet since there are many works still left to be done there.

“We have asked for the sanction for completing the construction of the park but the approval has not come as yet,” Lyngdoh added.
