SHILLONG: In a late night incident, one person was reportedly burnt to death inside a Maruti Van by miscreants at Bomfyle road adjacent to Boyce Road behind Shillong College in the city here on Monday night.

The body of the persons is completely charred beyond recognition making it difficult for the police to identify him. The incident has created shock waves in the city as the vehicle was found parked along the roadside with the charred body of the person inside.

Superintendent of police (city) M Kharkrang while speaking about the incident informed that the DNA test would be conducted on the body to ascertain the identity of the deceased.

Meanwhile some people have turned up before the police who presume that the deceased is one Durga Bahadur Sunar (38) but his identity can only be established after a post mortem, police said.

The vehicle, a Maruti van (ML 05B 7807) was completely gutted in the enraging fire.

The police say that this case is rather unusual as the vehicle was locked from inside. They suspect that the person may have been murdered before the incident took place.

It was evident that the person inside the vehicle was not even struggling to escape while the vehicle was set on fire,” police sources said.

The self acclaimed relatives of the deceased say that Durga Bahadur Sunar had hired the vehicle from the owner of one M Haldar, a resident of Upper Shillong area.

Police will also send the blood sample of the deceased to the forensic science laboratory to establish the cause of death.

Post mortem on the body has been conducted and police are awaiting the report, adding the investigation is on to find out the truth behind the incident.
